Walau begitu, adanya hutan mangrove tetap berperan penting.

Indonesian Mangroves: Potential Solutions to Environmental Issues

indonesiabaik.id - Mangroves in Indonesia are growing more and more every year. This suggests a positive step in Indonesia's efforts to save its mangrove ecosystems.

According to the National Mangrove Map created by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2021, there are 3,364,076 hectares of mangroves in Indonesia overall, including 2,661,281 hectares inside the area and 702,799 hectares outside it.

This figure indicates a considerable rise in the overall area of 52,835 hectares when compared to the entire mangrove area in 2013–2019, which was 3,311,207 hectares.

However, if the mangrove area is compared with the total forest in Indonesia, the area makes up only about 2 percent.

Even though they only make up 2% of the total area, mangrove forests are nonetheless important. Mangroves are one of the answers to different environmental issues, particularly to addressing environmental harm brought on by the elimination of animal habitats. Both humans and animals are harmed by this damage.

According to Indonesia's Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya, mangrove forests, which make up only around 2 percent of the country's total forest cover, are able to store 10 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions.

Indonesian Mangrove Condition

Three categories of mangrove conditions—dense mangroves, medium mangroves, and rare mangroves—are distinguished based on the percentage of canopy cover. According to SNI 7717-2020, dense mangroves are defined as having a canopy cover of at least 70%, medium mangroves have a canopy cover of between 30% and 70%, and rare mangroves have a canopy cover of less than 30%.

On the 3,364,076 hectares of mangroves in Indonesia, dense mangroves account for 3,121,239 hectares (93%), medium mangroves for 188,363 hectares (5%), and rare mangroves for 54,474 hectares (2%).

Based on the condition and distribution of mangroves outside the forest area, the mangroves with the highest dense cover are in East Kalimantan Province, the highest moderate mangroves are in North Kalimantan Province, and the highest rare mangroves are in North Sumatra and Central Java Provinces.
